You’ve worked hard – from K through 12 – and now it’s time for college. Bet at times you thought you’d never get here! You are a senior and getting ready to go to college, and it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have a little help to do so. Scholarships, loans and grants were created just for that purpose – a little help, and sometimes, a lot of help. You’d be amazed at the dollars out there waiting for you to find them. Listed below are only a few of programs available, but one might be just right for you. Check them out and for more, go see our high school guidance counselor – they are there to help you!

American Legion Texas Auxiliary General Education Scholarship

Are you a descendant or dependent of a veteran who served during the Grenada conflict, Korean War, Lebanon conflict, Panama conflict, Persian Gulf War, WWI, WWII, or Viet Nam? Are you a high school student living in Texas? If you answered ‘yes’ to these questions, you might be eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded in the amount of $500, may be used at 2-year or 4-year eligible educational institution. You also must be able to demonstrate your need for financial assistance. Application requires letters of recommendation, transcript, nomination by a local unit, a resume listing any financial support resources you may have, and a listing of your extra-curricular activities. American Legion Texas Auxiliary Medical

Carl N. & Margaret Karcher Founders

This scholarship is directed toward a high school senior who is a resident of, among other states, Texas. Funds provided are to be utilized at an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university. There is no major field of study specified for this award, and, if selected you will receive $1,000. If you are in the immediate family of an employee of Carl’s Jr. Restaurants, or one of its affiliates, you are ineligible for this scholarship. Robert C. Byrd Honors

You have worked hard and have shown consistently high scholastic achievement! Now, due to that hard work, you may qualify for this prestigious scholarship. You must be a high school senior and live in Texas. Scholastically, you must have an outstanding record of achievement, and be in the top 10% of your graduating class. Award is renewable for up to four years, with an initial amount of $1,500. Those selected for this scholarship may attend any accredited college or university anywhere in the United States, however, those attending U.S. military academies are not eligible. Horatio Alger Texas Scholarship Program

If you are a high school senior who has already faced and overcome great obstacles in your life, you need to take a closer look at this program.

You must be a Texas graduating high school senior that can demonstrate financial need; that you have a history of academic achievement; that you have displayed depth of character; and, that you are service orientated. To apply you will need to submit an essay, copy of your transcript, a letter of support, and an income statement. The scholarship may be used for full-time undergraduate study at accredited universities and colleges in the United States. There are multiple awards, each in the amount of $5,000. Texas 4-H

If you are a current Texas 4-H member, and are about to graduate from high school in the top fourth of your class, you may qualify for one of these scholarships. You must have a minimum SAT score of 1350 or a 19 on your ACT. Funds may be used for undergraduate study at any of the specified colleges or universities in Texas. Texas Public Education Grant

If you intend to major in education, are a graduating high school student living in Texas, and can demonstrate your need for financial assistance, read on. You will be required to complete the free FSFSA application on line (see ‘note’ on previous page for details). Funds awarded can be used at specific public universities and colleges within the state. The amount of these grants vary each year depending on funding. Texas Scholarships for Nursing Students

If you meet the qualifications noted above, but want to major in nursing, THIS one’s for you! The awards vary in amount but there is a ceiling of $3,000 per scholarship. Texas Tech

As the name suggests these scholarships are awarded to student who have shown exceptional academic ability. All applicants to the University are eligible for an award and by virtue of application are in the pool of applicant students. Scholarships to qualify for non-resident fee waivers

Scholarships considered to be competitive are those that are awarded by a Texas University scholarship committee and which were/are awarded to a student who had to compete for the award, with other students from within the State. Such awards can be complimented by the waiver of non-resident fees, saving students from out of State significant dollars.


There are many donors in industry, business and private enterprise who afford through their generous contributions, financial opportunities for students in the State. Donors provide scholarships to Texas Tech for distribution to able or needy students. Texas A&M University

If research is your strength then look to Texas A&M for great study and scholarship opportunities. This University gave out a whopping 433 million dollars in financial aid last year alone. A&M is the seventh largest university in the United States and with over 150 courses of study to choose from it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a niche.

A&M scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, extra curricular activities, volunteer services, employment and in some cases, financial need. The Texas Conference for Women

Every year the sponsors and supporters of this conference award six scholarships of $5000 dollars each to deserving women who balance leadership and study. Since its inception, the program has awarded more than $240,000 in scholarship funds. Scholarships are given in each of the following categories:

Texas State University

Of course no information about scholarships in Texas would be complete without mentioning the generous contributions of Texas State. Texas State is an excellent choice for study offering n 111 undergraduate and 86 masters degrees as well as nine doctorate degrees in the areas of Aquatic Resources, Criminal Justice, Education, Geography, and Physical Therapy.

Texas State-Funded Scholarships

The State of Texas provides education funding for several scholarships for students attending colleges and universities within the State. Some are based on the program of study and some are based on proven academic ability. More information is available at: www.uh.edu.

Highest Ranking High School Graduate

The highest ranking graduate of each accredited high school in Texas is exempt from tuition at public colleges in Texas for two semesters of the first regular session following graduation.

Top 10% High School Graduate Scholarship

The scholarship is intended to encourage financially needy high school graduates in the top 10% of their class to attend a Texas public institution of higher education. Each qualifying student is eligible to receive $2,000 if they enroll fulltime in a Texas public college or university.


The 80th Texas legislature established the Engineering Scholarship Program to provide scholarships to students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering at a participating general teaching institution in Texas. Scholarship recipients may receive up to $5000 per academic year.

5th Year Accounting

The purpose of this scholarship is to increase the number of highly trained and educated professional accountants available to serve the residents of this state and identify, recognize and support outstanding scholars who plan to pursue careers in accounting.

Good Neighbor

The Good Neighbor Scholarship Program is to encourage academically talented students from the countries of the Western (American) hemisphere to pursue higher education in the State of Texas thus, establishing a beneficial link between the State of Texas and their home countries.

Mexican Citizens with Financial Need-Border County Waiver

The purpose of this waiver is to waive nonresidential tuition for students from Mexico. Eligible students must be full time and citizens of Mexico, residing in Mexico. Students must also exhibit financial need as determined by the TAFSA (Texas Application for State Financial Aid), which must be submitted every year to determine eligibility.

Early High School

The purpose of the Early High School Graduation Scholarship Program is to provide tuition and fee assistance to students completing grades 9 - 12 early or with a significant number of college hours; thus, enabling and encouraging the student to attend college in Texas.
