North Carolina Scholarships and Grants

This is an amazing time of your life and you should savor every moment! But, while you’re enjoying all the activities and special times associated with your senior year, you need to take a minute to think about next fall – in college. Right now is when you need to apply for scholarships and grants to help pave the path to your education. The opportunities listed below might just be exactly what you need to give you a little shove into your tomorrow! Check them out!

Children of War Veterans

If one or both of your parents served in the U.S. military at a time of war, and is deceased or disabled, you may qualify for this scholarship. If you live in North Carolina, are a high school senior, and can provide proof of need for financial assistance, here are a few more details:

  • Scholarship covers full tuition, plus
  • up to $2,200 room and board allowance for up to four years in public colleges or universities, or
  • up to $4,500 room and board allowance for up to four years in private schools.

The parent must have lived in North Carolina at the time of their enlistment, and you must have been born here and still reside here. If you would like more information, check out the website at: www.doa.state.nc.us/vets/benefits-scholarships.htm.

Golden LEAF Scholars Program – for Two and Four Year Colleges

These scholarships are awarded to students who will enroll in 2-year NC community colleges or 4-year NC public universities. In order to be eligible you must be able to provide proof of need for financial assistance to continue your education. You must also have a good record of scholastic achievement, proven leadership ability, and be a participant in community service activities. There are multiple awards in both categories. Latino Diamante Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is designated to be used for study at certain North Carolina schools, by persons of Hispanic American heritage, who live in North Carolina. Along with the application you will need to submit your transcript showing a GPA of at least 2.5, letters of recommendation, and an essay. This award is in the amount of $750. Legislative Tuition Fund

This is a renewable scholarship intended for use at specified North Carolina private colleges and universities. To apply you must be a high school senior and live in the state. The amount awarded for these grants is determined by the state legislature each year. This year, numerous grants will be given, in the amount of $1,950 each. Get on line to find out which schools are eligible to receive these funds at www.cfnc.org. Then contact the financial aid office at one of the listed schools to receive an application.

Student Incentive Grant

Funds from this grant may be used at specifically approved schools in the state. In order to qualify you must live in-state, and be able to provide proof of financial need to continue your education. This is another situation where many, many of these grants are awarded each year – this year in the amount of $700 each. Go to the website at www.cfnc.org for additional application information.

Troy Douglas Carr Scholarship for Criminal Justice

Does the idea of a career in this field fascinate you? If so, and if you live in North Carolina, and can obtain a nomination from either an active or retired law enforcement officer who lives in the state, then this just might be the scholarship you’ve been seeking. You will also have to submit an essay, other letters of recommendation, and your transcript along with your application. This award is in the amount of $2,000, and you must major in criminal justice or law enforcement to receive it. Go to the website for more information: www.troycarr.org.

Maya Angelou/Vivian Baxter

This is a renewable scholarship in the amount of $2,500 that can be used at any UNCF approved school in the U.S. To apply, you must live in North Carolina, have a record of academic excellence, be in need of financial assistance to go to college, have demonstrated strong leadership abilities, and performed some sort of community service. North Carolina Community College Grant & Loan

This is a student loan and will need to be repaid upon graduation. The funds it provides are intended for use at 2-year community colleges within the state. To qualify, you must complete the FSFSA (see ‘note’ on previous page) to provide proof of financial need. You must also qualify for a Federal Pell Grant. This program is designed to assist students pursuing careers in under-served but high-demand occupations. For additional information, go to the website: www.nccs.cc.nc.us.
