Engineering Scholarships and Grants

A career as an engineer is an excellent option for anyone who has an analytical mind and enjoys working with his or her hands. An engineer is a person who designs, invents and builds everything from toys to tools to medical devices. In addition to general degrees the diversity of specializations in the engineering field makes it an attractive option for high school graduates.

Engineer Career Education

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required to be accredited in the United States. Masters and doctorate degrees of engineering are also available. High school graduates considering a career in engineering must display a strong aptitude for math and sciences and some competence with computers, communications and business to be considered for acceptance to an engineering program.

University engineering programs generally run for four years with the first two spent concentrating on mathematics, calculus, chemistry and physics skills. The last two years are spent in specialized programmes which may include environmental studies, robotics, materials, manufacturing processes and CAD (computer aided design).

Industries

Employers of engineers cross almost every job sector imaginable including government, research and development, teaching facilities, the military, consulting firms and manufacturing industries and many of these industries and organizations offer scholarships to students with an interest in engineering or in an engineering specialization.

Manufacturing industries employ the largest number of engineers in the United States, approximately 250 000 engineers work in this sector in the areas of fabrication, transportation, design, building and maintenance of tools and plant.

Outside of the manufacturing sector engineers fill administrative, technical sales, design, teaching, consulting, planning, and agriculture and management positions. College graduates in this specialization have the greatest range of opportunity of any other engineering field. For the recent graduate there is no shortage of entry level engineering jobs both at home and abroad.

SME Education Foundation

Since 1998, this Foundation has provided over $3.5 million dollars in financial aid through its various scholarship programs. The Foundation awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors, current undergraduates and masters or doctoral degree students pursuing degrees in manufacturing and related fields at two year and four year colleges.

SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship

Applicants must be a child or grandchild of an SME member, be a graduating high school either senior or undergraduate student with no more than 30 credit hours, and have a minimum SAT score of 1000, and/or ACT score of 21. (SME website)

Albert E. Wischmeyer Memorial

Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or current undergraduate student who is a current resident of Western New York State and must plan to attend or be enrolled in an accredited degree program in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology or mechanical technology at a college or university in New York State.

Caterpillar Scholars Award

Scholarship applicants must be full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a manufacturing engineering degree program, they must have completed a minimum of 30 college credit hours, and be seeking a career in manufacturing engineering. Preference will be given to students who have participated in a STEPS camp.

Phoenix

Scholarship applicants must be a graduating high school senior or current undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering or a closely related field and who plan to or are attending an accredited college or university in Arizona.

Although called by different names these SME Education Foundation scholarships are available for study in every State on a State-by-State basis.

E. Wayne Kay Community College

Applicants must be a graduating high school student in their senior year who commits to enrol in a manufacturing engineering or technology program at an accredited community college, trade school, or other two year degree granting institution which offers programs in manufacturing or a closely related field.

Edward S. Roth Manufacturing

Scholarship applicants must be U.S. citizens and current full-time undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited four-year degree program in manufacturing engineering at one of the 13 listed ABET accredited schools. Applicant students must be seeking a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. A preference is given to students demonstrating financial need, minority students and students participating in a Co-Op program.

In addition to the other endowed scholarships offered by SAE, many engineering colleges and universities have chosen to offer their own scholarship through SAE International. These scholarships are sponsored by the participating universities and colleges, and range in value from $400 to full tuition.

Criteria are established and all applications are judged by the universities. The applicant must apply to and attend the named university. Once awarded, these scholarships are not transferable to another university.

STEM Scholars Program

The STEM Scholars program is a five-year program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) starting in Fall 2010. The program annually awards 10 renewable scholarships to incoming freshmen or transfer students of approximately $3,800, increasing the group to 40 students in years four and five. Eligible students must select a major offered in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, demonstrate academic excellence and show financial need. This program crosses STEM disciplines within the College of EMS by building a strong network through various group activities.
