South Dakota Scholarships and Grants

American Legion South Dakota Auxiliary Scholarship

If you are graduating senior high school student living in our state, and you are the dependent of a veteran, you’re half way to qualifying for this scholarship. Awards are in the amount of $500 each. If you would like to inquire about this opportunity, contact:

American Legion South Dakota Auxiliary’s Nurse’s Scholarship

If you’ve always want to be a nurse, can meet all of the qualifications noted above, and you or a parent are an active member of the local American Legion Auxiliary – read on!!! Two of these scholarships are awarded each year, in the amount of $500 each. If you would like more information about this nursing scholarship, contact the Department Secretary at the office noted above. There is no website available.

Horatio Alger South Dakota Scholarship Program

If you are a high school senior who has already faced and overcome great obstacles in your life, you need to take a closer look at this program.

Other requirements include students be graduating from a South Dakota High School; that you be able to demonstrate financial need; that you have a minimum GPA of 2.0, and have a record of good academic achievement; that you are serious-minded in your approach to your future; and, that you are service oriented. Along with your completed application you will need to submit an essay, copy of your transcript, a letter of support, and an income statement. The scholarship may be used for full-time undergrad study at 2 or 4-year institutions in the United States. Robert C. Byrd Honors

If you have really worked to maintain excellent grades throughout your scholastic career, are a high school senior who lives here, are not in debt to the federal government, have never been sentenced for a drug offense, and plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college or university full-time, you may be the one to receive this award. Application requires proof of eligibility which includes a minimum 3.5 GPA, and 30 ACT. This is a renewable scholarship, and initial award is in the amount of $1,500. Annis I. Fowler/Kaden

If you want to be an elementary school teacher and are a high school student in South Dakota, this scholarship might be perfect for you. The amount of the award is $1,000, and will be given to a freshman entering the University of South Dakota, Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, or Northern State University this year. You must have a record of outstanding academic achievement with a GPA of at least 3.0. Along with the application you will need to submit your transcript which has to indicate your high school 3-year grade point average, your class ranking, and a list of the courses completed. Ardell Bjugstad

Are you a high school senior living in our state, who is an American Indian and member of a recognized tribe with a reservation here in South Dakota? Do you have a record of outstanding scholastic achievement? Are you known for your leadership ability? Does your strength of character set you above the crowd? Then you should apply for this scholarship – pronto!!! Award amount is $500 and may be used at any university in the United States. Along with your application you will need to submit your transcript indicating your GPA and class ranking, letters of recommendation, and verification of your tribal enrollment.
